Poems On Retirement

Poems on Retirement Cake

Poems on retirement which are more touched than touching. They’re also more likely to get you steamed than warm your heart. But let’s face it, retirement is just a funny phase of life.

Some would say that there’s nothing funny about stock market volatility and its attendant financial insecurity. This poem begs to differ.

Creative Retirement
By Tom Mulhern

The stock market took
A really big hit
Which means that retirement
Will be delayed a bit

In fact it seems retirement
May not come at all
But into depression
I will not fall

No, I’ll get to retire
And have all that free time
Although it may take
A new career in crime.

Here’s another poem on retirement which shows that you’ve got more to worry about than the stock market.

Changing The Rules
By Tom Mulhern

You thought you could rest from earning a wage
Then they increased the retirement age
This cost-saving plan has you set to retire
About three days before you expire.

Retirement represents a sometimes-significant change in personal status and identity. This can lead to a certain degree of touchiness.

The Surly Not-Senior
By Tom Mulhern

Don’t call me a “senior”
Don’t call me “mature”
These euphemisms
Are hard to endure

“Geezer” or “codger”
Would be more direct
But they might cause your nose
And my fist to connect.

On the other hand, some retirees become downright philosophical about the accumulation of years that typically accompanies retirement.

Don’t Let This Get Around
By Tom Mulhern

They say greater wisdom
Comes with age
But I don’t think the years
Have made me a sage

Indeed, sometimes I fear
(though I hope it’s not so)
That the older I get
The less that I know.
