Happy New Years Poems

happy new years poems

Happy New Years poems to ring in the year with style, grace and a renewed sense of . . . rollicking rhyme. If your resolutions include more grins and guffaws (or even just more chuckles and chortles), give these a try.

For many, the new year is all about new resolutions. Only they’re not always that new.

Be It Resolved. Again.
By Tom Mulhern

This is the year and now is the time
Out of the doldrums I'm going to climb

My financial house I'll finally put right
As my investment returns soar out of sight

I'll get into shape and lose the spare tire
And use all my minutes before they expire

My relationships all will be smooth and fulfilling
With negative people no more time I'll be killing

These are my goals, and on this I'm quite clear
For they're the same ones I set this time last year.

What would American happy new years poems be without a nod to the excited and overcrowded events at midnight in New York? For many of us, the ball drop is a vicarious and visual prelude to the real thing, which takes place a bit later in the evening.

New Years In The Middle
By Tom Mulhern

Big ball dropping in Times Square
High-def TV makes it feel like we're there

But far from New York, we're way out here
Ready to ring in a brand new year

When the ball has finally made its descent
And we all drink a toast to the new year now sent

Why, we get back one hour of the year that's just flown
While we count down for real in the Central Time Zone.

The transition from one year to the next raises fundamental questions about the nature of the time-space continuum. If such questions have been gnawing at you, consider the next poem.

Following The Sun
By Tom Mulhern

If we got in a jet and flew westerly
Could we keep the old year indefinitely?

Time might stand still as we fly through space
But we'd never be able to stay in one place

That doesn't seem like such a smart thing to do
Better out with the old and in with the new

Besides, while this theory of flight has unimpeachable design
It runs into problems at the International Date Line.

Let’s close out this collection of happy new years poems with one celebrating the promise of a new beginning.

A Fresh Start Is The Best Part
By Tom Mulhern

It's New Years Day
And I have to say
I'm glad last year
Has gone away

My ship failed to come in
To my great chagrin
But now I get a chance
To try again.
