Funny Thanksgiving Poems

funny thanksgiving poems

Funny Thanksgiving poems that season this uniquely American holiday with a dash of humor guaranteed not to leave a bad taste. Gas and heartburn, maybe, but no lingering bad taste. Which just goes to show that something can be in bad taste and still not taste bad.

Thanksgiving is all about food and family. As this first poem suggests, the food usually gets higher ratings.

Gathered Round the Thanksgiving Table
By Tom Mulhern

It’s Thanksgiving Day and that means
It’s time to assemble

With relatives, some of whom
We hope we don’t resemble

Their manners are embarrassing,
Their attitudes outdated

We’d be a lot more thankful
If to them we weren’t related.

You’d expect funny Thanksgiving poems to have a turkey-related entry. This next turkey makes an appearance at nearly every Thanksgiving get-together.

Don’t Blame the Turkey
By Tom Mulhern

After Thanksgiving meal, when you’re feeling a bit drowsy
A feeling usually pleasant, but occasionally lousy

An over-informed family member will always say
“It’s the tryptophan that makes you feel this way”

About the turkey’s content they’ll then pontificate
When the real reason you’re sleepy is because you just overate.

Americans think they know all about the first Thanksgiving. Well, here’s the rest of the story.

First Thanksgiving
By Tom Mulhern

The Indians living near Plymouth Rock
Looked on in disbelief and shock
At the strange new people from across the sea
Who seemed determined to cut down every tree

Alarmed by this rapid deforestation
And hoping to shorten its damaging duration
The Indians agreed to take decisive action
And so came up with a clever distraction

They had a big feast, with plenty of dried deer jerky
Which the Pilgrims thought tasted a lot like turkey
The party turned out better than any they could remember
Which inspired them to repeat it every November

Unfortunately for the Indians, that first Thanksgiving Day
Encouraged the destructive new visitors to stay.

Thanksgiving Day in the U.S.A
By Tom Mulhern

Turkey and dressing and cranberries too
Pumpkin pie before the meal is through

Houseful of people, new in-laws to see
Football to watch on the T.V.

Thanksgiving Day is filled with cliché
And we wouldn’t have it any other way.
