Funny Easter Poems

Funny Easter poems that celebrate hopping down the bunny trail, wearing a new bonnet in the Easter parade, and all the other ways we’ve trivialized and commercialized a perfectly good religious feast.

Let’s start off with a thoughtful reflection on the Easter basket, inspired by the method of inquiry made famous by an early Greek philosopher.

Socrates and the Easter Basket
By Tom Mulhern

Here's a question (and I've been dying to ask it)
What's the right style for a proper Easter basket?

Should it be round or oval or square?
Should it be homemade or purchased somewhere?

Would an old milk carton, cut in half
Be OK, or just cause people to laugh?

Should the artificial grass be green, pink or blue?
How do I know what's the right thing to do?

But whether the basket is brand new or old
The key question is, how much candy will it hold?

While we’re in a pensive mood, let’s probe a bit further into this whole Easter bunny story with the following funny Easter poems entry.

Easter Bunny in Context
By Tom Mulhern

Maybe it's just me
(It quite well could be)
But it certainly seems a bit funny

That the end of each Lent
Whether ill or well-spent
Is marked by the Easter bunny

Down the trail he hops
And allegedly stops
At each house to share eggs from his hoard

Whether fiction or true
What's it got to do
With the day of the risen Lord?

OK, I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for some funny Easter poems that don’t require much introspection. That would be the following.

Easter Bunny Limerick
By Tom Mulhern

They say there's a fast-moving rabbit
With a peculiar generous habit
On Easter day
He gives candy away
To children, who can't wait to grab it.

Easter lilies are a lovely symbol of the season. They make a nice corsage on your lapel, but don’t work quite so well in alternate placements.

Can We Put This Behind Us?
By Tom Mulhern

The Easter lily you gave me
Was lovely and sweet
I'm sorry I left it lying there
On the car seat
Which you didn't notice
And now people stare
At the pressed white lily
On your derriere.

Any collection of funny Easter poems would be incomplete without an ode to the new Easter bonnet, a sartorial tradition that is sadly slipping from the fashion scene.

Easter Bonnet Fantasy
By Tom Mulhern

If I were to get a new Easter bonnet
There are just a few things I'd like to see upon it

One white bow and another of pink
A bunch of daisies, and I also think

It should have a rose, and a lovebird or two
Plus a wide floppy brim, to keep off the dew

An ostrich feather, and one from a peacock
To show that I'm hip and ready to rock

A pineapple will be the crowning touch
Though quibblers might say it's a bit too much

And they could have a point, for this hat's getting big
So maybe I'll settle for a new Easter wig.

As parents, we often try to use holiday traditions as a way to bring our families closer together. The results sometimes remind us why it’s a good thing that most days are not holidays, which brings us to the last entry in our funny Easter poems parade.

Egging Them On
By Tom Mulhern

Painting eggs with your children is supposed to be a memory
That you'll treasure and recall in times of quiet reverie

But somehow it didn't seem to work out that way
When we all painted eggs on that fateful Easter day

"I wanted that egg, you took it from me!"
"You painted your egg the same color as pee"

"I could be with my friends, but no, I have to be
Here painting eggs with my stupid family!"

"He broke my egg, just look how it's spoiled
And it made a big mess, 'cause it wasn't hard-boiled"

"These eggs are gross, I'm not touching them because
You touched them all with your grubby little paws."

No, while it was an experience we won't soon forget
We won't do it again, and on that you can bet.
