Dad's 60th Birthday

by Karen
(Blackfordby, Derbyshire UK)

Blackfordby Spring, primary water source for the village until about 20 years before Ken was born.

Blackfordby Spring, primary water source for the village until about 20 years before Ken was born.

Karen writes:

Name: Ken
Date of Birth: 2nd May 1950
Sex: Male
Age on Birthday: He will be 60!
Wife: Maureen
Me (only daughter; Karen)
Mother in Law; Audrey
Village he lives in; Blackfordby

For the majority of his life he has been a miner, (at 3 local pits; Measham/Cadley/Daw Mill.
Since taking early retirement he is at the minute a handy man at Willesley Park golf club, Ashby.

Loves drinking! has a can a lager every night. He enjoys walking up to our local pub on a Saturday night (The Bluebell (known locally as 'the bell'))

Loves his 2 Chocolate Laboradors: Lincoln & Chester and he walks them over the fields which are behind the house.

Loves his garden. Grows his own plants and tomatoes from seeds (has 2 greenhouses which through the winter he has heaters in so they do not freeze) The garden is very picturesque.

Loves his television. He is a permanent fixture in the kitchen (til he is awakened, as many a nights he falls asleep in there) watching "his" TV. He sits at the table with a sudoku book and the can of lager.
Television programs rule his evening even when on holiday as he circles the TV guide for it to be recorded!

Loves going on holiday with my Mum (mainly Blackpool)

Dad can fix any problem (being electrical/plumbing/diy, etc.). He is the first to go to with any problem, and will try his hand at anything.
Would do anything for me, my mum & my Nana (his mother in law)

He is a one off.....My Hero.

Tom responds:

Karen, thank you for sharing that lovely birthday tribute to your Dad. Here is your poem for him on his special day.

Dad’s 60th Birthday
By Tom Mulhern

When he was younger, Ken thought nothing finer
Than to spend his days working as a miner

There at Measham, Cadley and Daw Mill
Coaxing the coal right out of the hill

But now that he's 60 he spends his days thinkin'
About rambling the fields with Chester and Lincoln

And tending his garden, growing beauty from seeds
(2 greenhouses with heaters are all that he needs)

But he's not all work, as his friends know well
When it's Saturday night and they're all at "The Bell"

To have a good laugh and put back a few
And catch up on the gossip, old and new

Ken is not addicted to television, he just thinks it's right
To spend hours in front of it every night

(With a sudoku book and lager in a can
You'd be hard-pressed to find a more contented man)

He even has shows recorded while he's away
So that when he returns they're set to replay

Whenever there's a problem, or something needs repaired
Then Ken is your man, his talent generously shared

With someone who might need a skilled hand on the scene
(Especially if that someone is Karen, Audrey or Maureen)

Ken, now that you've reached the age of "Six-Zero"
Karen wants you to know you are truly her hero.
